My Wait List Medications

| December 14, 2010 | 0 Comments

While I was waiting for heart transplantation, this is the form I used to show my medications and track my intake.  Dr. Hoffman, my cardiologist at Tampa General Hospital, insisted that I also take my blood pressure and heart rate every morning and weigh myself before eating.  I kept another chart that reflected these readings.

Now, my heart rate is typically between 100 and 110.  Before the transplant, if my heart rate hit the high 80’s or low 90’s, I was nearly paralyzed and had to lie on the floor and wait for a reduction.  At that heart rate, everything was an effort.

I also found that my weight had a direct effect on my ability to breathe. When my weight was over 170, I labored to breathe whether I was exercising or not.  Inevitably the excess weight was the result of accumulated fluids in my abdomen.  Lasix was always the remedy for that.  Of course, Lasix has its own health risks and apparently can jeopardize the kidneys.

For me, Coreg was the medicine that stabilized me the most. Jantoven may have eased the blood flow, but it has many, many side effects, not the least of which is excessive bleeding.

In any case, by keeping this chart, I became very organized and conscious of my daily regimen. I would take this chart with me along with my weight and blood pressure – heart rate readings to every appointment, if for no other reason than to show my commitment and compliance.

This chart ended on the 29th of October, 2009.  Four days later, the call came and after 2 years of waiting, I received a new heart.
