Heart Transplant Statistics 09-25-12

As of 09-25-12 at 2041 ET, there are 3.286 patients on heart transplant wait lists across the US.  In 2012, 1,212 patients have received heart transplants. In 2011, 2,322 heart transplants were performed.

In 2012

462 Blood Type O patients received a heart transplant.  

499 Blood Type A patients received a heart transplant.

172 Blood Type B patients received a heart transplant.

79 Blood Type AB patients received a heart transplant.

2012 and 2011 Heart Transplants by age:

Age 1 = 151, (281 in 2011)

Age 1 – 5 = 153 (281 in 2011)

Age 6 – 10 = 127 (272 in 2011)

Age 11 – 17 = 357 (730 in 2011)

Age 18 – 34 = 1,567 (3050 in 2011)

Age 35 – 49 = 3,125 (6,603 in 2011)

Age 50 – 64 = 6,099 (12,578 in 2011)

Age 65 + = 2,267 (4,513 in 2011)

This post is a data-rich entry (see below). I hope this information has value to persons waiting or considering enrolling at a heart transplant center. For patients deciding where to enroll in a heart transplant program, you can see how centers available to you are performing.

I subscribe to the findings of the Johns Hopkins report indicating that small centers are nearing the end of the transplant business because they cannot attract the best caregivers. You can see that most regions and states are below par to meet their 2011 performance levels.

I was fortunate enough to find Tampa-General who was actually performing more annual transplants in one year than the number of patients on the wait list when I enrolled.

OPTN and UNet

The Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) is administered by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS).  On October 23, 1999, UNOS launched an online database system known as UNet which is managed by OPTN.  The purpose of this system was to collect, store, analyze and publish all pertinent information for wait-list patients, organ matching and transplants.  UNet is a web-based all-organ transplant database that was designed to enable the nation’s organ transplant centers to:

Register patients for transplant.

Match donated organs to waiting patients.

Manage time sensitive, life critical data of all patients before and after transplantation. 

UNet and OPTN

UNet is used by all the nation’s organ transplant programs, organ procurement organizations and histocompatibility or tissue typing laboratories. The system is designed to create a cooperative effort to share a limited number of donated organs from thousands of donors and patients.

On September 25, 2012, there were 115,699 patients awaiting transplants (all organs).  At the same time, 73,723 of those patients are actively waiting.  The difference comprises candidates that are listed as Status 7, meaning but they have chosen to not be on the listing for a period of time.

From January to June 2012, UNet indicates that 13,963 transplants were completed.  As of September 21, 2012, $6,930 had donated one or more organs.

Readers should understand that a patient who is waiting at more than one center, or for multiple organs, would have multiple registrations.
